Artist Statement

"I began to study seagulls about three years ago while on holiday with my family. An endless blue sky, sea air and sounds of calling gulls were all instantly evocative and nostalgic. I was initially inspired by their agility and aerobatics but became more impressed by the graceful ease at which they can glide through the thermals.

I began sketching; making marks that relate to their movements rather than their forms. From these, it seemed natural to obtain some photographic reference , especially as I have always had a fascination with photographic and moving images. Now, most of my work, is largely derived from photographic material. I use still photography, video and cine film as source material for my paintings. Each one has its own characteristics. From the sharp, fast shutter of an SLR, to the blurred, grainy, over saturated images produced by a Super 8 cine camera. They all capture elements of seagulls which evoke different feelings. Many of my seagull images are very distorted. Flashes of blurred white against blue. Photography reveals the ambiguity of form created through the mechanics of flight. And its this ambiguity I find deeply intriguing. It makes me aware of both, the possibilities of abstraction and of the inherent beauty found in nature. I want my seagull paintings to be timeless, to evoke a sense of nostalgia and convey feelings of freedom and tranquillity."
